Herkimer diamonds are exceptionally clear, naturally faceted, double-terminated quartz crystals found primarily in Herkimer County, New York, and surrounding areas. Formed nearly 500 million years ago, they are not true diamonds but are dubbed so for their brilliant, diamond-like geometric shape (usually 18 facets) and high hardness (7–7.5 on the Mohs scale).
Key Characteristics:
- Double-Terminated: These crystals have points at both ends, which is rare in quartz.
- Natural Brilliance: They are rarely cut or polished, as they come out of the ground with intense, natural luster.
- Origin: Found within vugs (cavities) in Cambrian-aged dolomite, mainly in New York.
- Inclusions: Often contain black carbon pockets, water, or petroleum inclusions
